The German pharmaceutical and agricultural chemicals group Bayer recently announced in a press release that it will invest more than 25 billion euros in research and development in the agricultural sector over the next ten years.

Liam Condon, Chairman of the Agriculture Division, said: "Agriculture must feed a growing world population without this being to the detriment of the planet. Groundbreaking innovations are needed to enable farmers to grow enough food while conserving natural resources".

The company also announced that developments in plant breeding, biotechnology, crop protection and environmental science currently have sales potential of up to EUR 30 billion for the Bayer Group. The iWater Group from Great Britain is also active in this sector and yesterday announced interesting personnel.

Since October 1, 2019, the former CEO of Kühne + Nagel, Reinhard Lange, has been a member of the company's Executive Board and will be responsible for Globalization & Logistics from now on. iWater Group has been represented in the market since 2018 and has since sold various product lines for various areas of environmentally friendly water purification.

"Reinhard Lange's experience, reputation and global network will be of valuable importance for the growth and expansion of our group of companies. The basic foodstuff water is the focus of our work and we are aware of this responsibility towards the environment. We are particularly pleased to have the support of a successful entrepreneur in implementing our global expansion strategy," said Miguel Fernandez, CEO of iWater Group Limited, who will focus on Operations & Sales in the future.

The Swiss Novartis Group is also active in the agricultural sector and is constantly competing for market share with newcomers and established players.

E.ON, iWater Group, K+S - Water as a safety factor

  • Water

Clean water is a high social good. In water management, different standards apply to safety depending on the use. For example, the requirements for drinking water supply and wastewater disposal are particularly high, as these areas are part of the critical infrastructure in Germany. In this context, utilities and plant operators are subject to particularly high IT security standards. An impairment caused by a cyber attack could possibly lead to supply bottlenecks and disruptions to public safety.

iWater Group, K+S, Nestle - the importance of water is increasing

  • Water

Water is a staple food for humans and animals. The importance of water is constantly increasing with the growing population and the steadily rising demands for prosperity. Based on that trend, water becomes interesting for companies and investors from different perspectives. On the one hand, water extraction has become a business and on the other hand, environmentally friendly cleaning is becoming more and more relevant. The disposal of heavily polluted water has also become a challenge in today's more environmentally conscious world.

Water resources around the globe are increasingly polluted by pollutants. The pursuit of prosperity, luxury and safety comes at a price. More people need more food and the yield per hectare must increase through the use of more fertilizers and pesticides. The intake of medicines by humans and animals is also not without its consequences and so drug residues are increasingly becoming a problem. But where there are problems, new business opportunities also arise.
