Electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly common sight on German roads, driven in part by the arrival of aggressively priced models from China. However, the rapid growth of electric mobility is placing mounting pressure on automotive supply chains. Automakers are grappling with volatile markets while becoming increasingly concerned about securing reliable access to critical raw materials. Commodities are no longer viewed as readily available inputs but as strategic assets essential to industrial competitiveness. This complex situation calls for new alliances: mining companies, major automakers, and dynamic project developers are pulling out all the stops to secure raw materials for the future.

Volkswagen: Full Speed Ahead with Vertical Integration

Automotive giant Volkswagen, through its battery subsidiary PowerCo, is aiming for comprehensive self-sufficiency in battery raw materials. To meet the demand for battery cells, the company plans to build European cell production capacity totaling 240 GWh per year by 2030. As the centrepiece of its North American expansion strategy, the company is currently building a battery factory in St. Thomas, Canada, with a potential investment volume of up to CAD 20 billion, including subsidies. The plant must strictly comply with local procurement regulations to benefit from the lucrative tax credits under the US Inflation Reduction Act. At the same time, stricter legal ESG requirements, such as Germany's Supply Chain Due Diligence Act, make relying on environmentally questionable sources of raw materials from Asia unattractive. To secure its supply, Volkswagen purchased a 9.9% stake in the Canadian lithium developer Patriot Battery Metals for CAD 69 million, including a 10-year offtake agreement. A similar deal involving sulphide nickel and copper could be an obvious next step.

BHP Group Reorganizes Its Raw Materials Portfolio

The Australian mining giant BHP Group is systematically shifting its existing project portfolio toward global metals of the future. Management is diverting funds from its traditional iron ore business to expand capacity in copper and metals for the energy transition. Due to the dramatic price drop caused by cheap Indonesian ore, the company's leadership temporarily suspended production at its Western Australia Nickel division starting in October 2024. The company will not consider resuming production until early 2027. A sale of the division is also a possibility. Nevertheless, BHP remains firmly committed to the electrification of the global economy. Electric vehicles require about four times as much copper as conventional internal combustion engines, which opens up enormous market opportunities for sustainable mining projects. Through its internal accelerator, BHP Xplor, the company is awarding up to USD 500,000 to early-stage exploration companies to secure early access to high-grade copper and nickel sulphide deposits in secure jurisdictions.

Power Metallic Mines Has What All Automakers Need: Drilling Results Are Impressive

Canadian mineral developer Power Metallic Mines first caught the attention of the mining world several years ago with groundbreaking discoveries at its NISK project in the Canadian province of Québec. Drilling in the Lion Zone revealed a high-grade system containing copper, nickel, platinum, palladium, gold, and silver. According to observers, the project is geologically comparable to the legendary, exceptional deposits at Voisey's Bay. Particularly outstanding drill results included intervals of 11.46% CuEqRec (copper equivalent) over 22 m and 5.66% CuEqRec over 39 m. Metallurgical laboratory tests conducted by SGS also showed recovery rates of 98.9% for copper, 96.8% for platinum, and 93.9% for palladium using locked-cycle flotation tests. To fully assess the zone's deeper potential, Power Metallic Mines is relying on specialized service providers and muon tomography.

Opportunity after a sell-off? Power Metallic Mines is in an exciting phase.

Unlike many small competitors, Power Metallic Mines is well-capitalized. A large portion of the freely traded shares is firmly held by renowned mining heavyweights such as Robert Friedland, Rob McEwen, Eric Sprott, and Gina Rinehart. With the cash raised from financing rounds in late 2025 and June 2026, during the latter of which Eric Sprott became a shareholder of Power Metallic, management, led by CEO Terry Lynch, is pushing forward with a comprehensive drilling program totaling more than 100,000 m. To broaden its investor base in the US, the company is currently preparing for a listing on the Nasdaq. At the same time, Power Metallic Mines is strengthening its position as a potential partner for international corporations.

Industry Heavyweights Are Already Invested: Resource Estimate Expected Soon

A key catalyst is the official resource estimate, expected in the coming weeks. If the estimate confirms more than 10 million tonnes of ore, the company would have successfully cemented its status as a first-class acquisition target. Even a smaller resource, however, is likely to attract strong industry interest and could support development under a satellite mining model, supplying nearby processing facilities. With its high-grade mineralization and its diversified portfolio of critical metals, Power Metallic Mines is well positioned to benefit from the industry's growing hunger for strategic resources. The coming weeks could prove pivotal for shareholders.

Ammunition, Engines, Mines: Rheinmetall, Mercedes-Benz and Power Metallic Mines in the Raw Materials Race

The defence industry is booming, the automotive sector is electrifying—and both are competing for many of the same raw materials: copper, nickel, and platinum-group metals. Their production is often concentrated in politically sensitive regions such as Russia, while China controls a large share of global processing. The result: companies that fail to secure supplies in time risk production lines grinding to a halt. Rheinmetall needs these metals for ammunition and armoured vehicles, Mercedes-Benz needs them for batteries and electric motors, and Power Metallic Mines aims to supply them. We take a closer look at the potential upside for the shares of this trio.

When military equipment or industrial tools reach their performance limits, a highly sought-after heavy metal often comes to the rescue. With a melting point of 3,422 °C, tungsten withstands even extreme heat and has a density nearly identical to that of gold. Yet it is precisely with this key raw material, tungsten, that Western industrialized nations are coming under pressure. Beijing controls over 80% of global production and has significantly tightened export controls in recent years. Since China itself became a net importer in 2025 and the Western defense industry faces strict procurement bans, a race is underway for mining capacity in secure jurisdictions. This is where Almonty Industries comes into play, as it is considered a leading Western tungsten producer. We take a closer look at the market.

Things are really picking up again in the commodities sector. Many companies are reporting strong quarterly results, even though costs have recently increased due to rising inflation. Nevertheless, the industry is brimming with energy, especially since many companies have cleaned up their balance sheets in recent years and are now debt-free. This aligns with the gold market, where, according to the World Gold Council, central banks purchased more gold in the second quarter than ever before. It appears they took advantage of the price correction. In any case, the outlook for commodities is favourable. That is why today we are taking a closer look at the stocks of Almonty Industries, K92 Mining and Aya Gold & Silver.
