The German government's decision to stop the environmental bonus has caused a drastic decline in new registrations of electric cars in Germany. After almost 55,000 battery-powered vehicles in December, the number dropped to 22,500 in the first month of the year. According to ADAC, citing data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the percentage share of electric vehicles in total new registrations plummeted from 22.6% to 10.5%. By contrast, the situation outside Germany looks considerably more positive. Around 1,120,000 new registrations were registered in the US in 2023, representing a growth of 54%. China remains by far the largest market, with 6.66 million electric vehicles sold, and the growth curve continues to rise at 24%.

The global energy transition is being shaped by key players in electromobility and renewable energies. The Chinese car manufacturer BYD continues its expansion in Europe with a new production facility for passenger cars in Hungary. BYD also focuses on sodium-ion batteries as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries for budget and mid-range models. The junior explorer, Edison Lithium, plays a decisive role here in the procurement of raw materials for battery production. Edison Lithium can meet the demand for raw materials for sodium-ion batteries with flying colours and is using this strategic move to its advantage. Edison Lithium's sites are all located in Argentina, which is back on the geopolitical trading floor thanks to its new president, Javier Milei. Siemens Energy, on the other hand, posted solid quarterly results despite ongoing challenges at offshore wind turbine problem child Siemens Gamesa. The Company is increasingly breaking away from its former parent company, Siemens, and will appoint two high-calibre individuals to the Supervisory Board to drive the transformation further.

The year 2024 promises to be highly interesting, that much is certain. The so-called electric boom has not yet taken place, and the falling lithium price of minus 80% in the current year speaks volumes. Of course, major investments such as a relatively expensive electric vehicle depend on the general situation and subsidies. However, neither of these contextual factors bode well. On the contrary, state subsidies are falling, and high inflation is weighing on private household budgets. So why not get the good old diesel through the MOT again? After all, continuing to drive an old vehicle is 100 times more sustainable than buying a new electric vehicle with rare and difficult-to-extract metals. Despite political support, hydrogen, wind and solar stocks have suffered significant losses in recent months. Lithium-ion batteries are the most widely used battery type for electric vehicles and stationary energy storage. Estimates vary widely, but by 2025, we will need between 500,000 and 850,000 thousand tons of lithium, but in 2022 only 130,000 tons were produced. Against the backdrop of continued high global demand for e-vehicles, many high-performance batteries will be needed.
