Mercedes-Benz, XXIX Metal, D-Wave Quantum - Copper shortage: Is a bottleneck looming due to new technologies?

  • Mining

  • Electromobility
  • Technology

Copper is an elementary industrial raw material whose importance is steadily increasing due to technological innovations and global megatrends. In particular, the rapid expansion of electromobility, the development of quantum computers, and artificial intelligence are driving demand to new heights. Electric vehicles require many times more copper than conventional vehicles with combustion engines due to batteries, engines and charging infrastructure. At the same time, demand is increasing in data centres and networks that rely on high-performance cables and cooling systems. Experts predict that global copper demand will increase by millions of tonnes by 2030 – and with it, new challenges for production and supply.

Sharp increases in energy commodities are hindering electrification projects. Copper is indispensable for these initiatives and will become one of the key resources driving innovation in the coming years. Without the red metal, electric motors cannot be built and huge amounts of electricity cannot be transported over land. Copper is also a critical component in designing a completely new energy infrastructure. Trends such as Web 3.0, high-performance computing, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence are further exacerbating the energy shortage. Significant demand increases are expected in China and India, whose resource hunger impacts the entire planet. The race against time is already in its third round; new copper deposits must be developed urgently! Which stocks are at the forefront?

Three companies are setting the course for further growth: PayPal is opening up a new business segment in the US and launching the "PayPal Ads" advertising network to use transaction data for retail media. This move could increase the Company's clout. Meanwhile, the demand for copper is rapidly picking up speed. Prismo Metals is therefore intensifying its exploration activities, particularly at the Palos Verdes project in Mexico, in order to benefit from the increasing demand. Rheinmetall has received an order from the US Army to develop unmanned ground vehicles for the S-MET program, strengthening the Company's position in autonomous military vehicles.

E-mobility, copper boom, and chemical crisis: Rheinmetall, Prismo Metals, and BASF showcase industry trends

Rheinmetall's share price has risen by 438.95% since the start of the Ukraine conflict. Now, the Company is looking far beyond the defense industry. From electric coolant pumps for hybrid vehicles to hydrogen recirculation blowers for fuel cells, Rheinmetall is positioning itself as a pioneer in key technologies for sustainable mobility. This demand is significantly impacting the need for copper. Here, Prismo Metals is positioning itself as a strategically ideal partner with projects in Mexico and the US. While BASF seeks to secure its competitiveness with these measures, this also raises questions about the future of the chemical industry in Europe and the impact of strict climate regulations on global corporations.

After a brief pause, gold returned with a brilliant breakout and crossed the USD 2,500 per ounce mark for the first time. This new all-time high has generated a striking buy signal. The conditions, with further escalation in geopolitics, provide the best opportunities for continued price increases. Copper also sent out positive signals. Despite economic concerns, the industrial metal may have found a bottom after the correction of recent weeks.

In the midst of a turbulent phase on the global markets, companies in the commodities sector are facing enormous challenges. Recent developments have increased volatility, as evidenced by the unexpectedly strong growth in China's commodity imports in July. Despite these positive signals, the market reaction has been subdued, partly due to negative indicators like the falling copper price. Copper serves as an early indicator of global economic strength. Investors eagerly await a potential rebound while market observers discuss the causes and future opportunities. Today, we will look at a steel, mining, and gold company to determine which one holds the most potential.

Globex Mining achieves several deal highlights: The exploration company receives CAD 2 million in cash from Agnico Eagle for a land purchase, with further opportunity for a growing asset. Over 23 months, an additional CAD 6 million is expected to flow to Globex Mining. Then follows an option agreement with Tomagold Corporation on a Canadian gold property at Gwillin Lake near Quebec. Total payments of six figures are due over the next four years. In addition, shares in Tomagold will be transferred to Globex Mining. While German Foreign Minister Baerbock was more conspicuous for flight mishaps, the Lufthansa Group achieved an adjusted EBIT of around EUR 1.1 billion in Q2/23. The subsidiaries SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Lufthansa Technik also posted record results. Furthermore, Rheinmetall is also taking to the skies - now supplying drones to Ukraine.

Low inflation in the US has given new impetus to the bulls. Not only are growth stocks benefiting from the hope that the interest rate cycle is coming to an end, but also gold. Thus, the gold price reacted on Wednesday by jumping to over USD 1,960 per troy ounce. Top-tier gold stocks such as Barrick also responded positively. Exploration companies have significant catch-up potential, including Viva Gold. The Company is favorably valued and has again reported positive drill results. The fact that the interest rate cycle is nearing its end is also evident in the chemical industry. Most recently, BASF issued a warning, and there are sell recommendations. On the other hand, there are buy recommendations for the Nel share.

At the beginning of May, analysts at Bank of America declared a new "super cycle" for basic and raw materials. What they mean by this is that a whole series of important materials will be in great short supply for years. The prime example is the red metal copper. The price of the industrial metal has almost doubled in the past 12 months. It is currently quoted at around USD 8,350 per tonne, not far from the historic high of USD 10,750. During the pandemic, the metal briefly fell to USD 4,500. Currently, however, forecasts are once again pointing upwards. Bank of America expects the price to more than double again to around USD 18,000 in the next three years. We take a look at some hot stocks.

Overall, copper is an indispensable part of the green transformation due to its excellent electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance and reliability. It enables the efficient use of renewable energies, promotes electromobility and supports sustainable infrastructure development. Due to recession fears, the base price corrected strongly in recent months. In the long term, copper should make a renewed attempt to reach new highs due to high demand and too little supply.
