Reducing methane emissions is becoming an increasingly important political priority on both sides of the Atlantic. While the European Union and international gas producers negotiate deadlines for new import regulations, the United States is accelerating the remediation of abandoned wells. With substantial government funding, a lucrative market is emerging for specialist environmental service providers. Zefiro Methane is at the centre of this development, rapidly expanding its operations across North America with fresh capital and new framework agreements.

Regulatory pressure and strategic responses in the US gas market

The global oil and gas industry faces regulatory upheaval, as demonstrated by a proposal from the European Commission in mid-October. Under the proposal, the EU will postpone strict methane rules for energy imports by one year, to 2028. Multinational corporations such as ExxonMobil warn of potential supply shortages in Europe and call for more time to implement the rules, aligning with the US government, which has also criticised the regulations. While the political debate continues, specialised producers such as EQT are focusing on demonstrating low emissions. As one of the largest natural gas producers in the US, EQT focuses almost exclusively on the Appalachian Basin and also markets liquefied natural gas (LNG) through its own LNG trading operations. In September 2026, EQT secured a ten-year LNG supply contract with Lithuania's Ignitis. Just a few days ago, the company also announced the acquisition of competitor Range Resources.

Zefiro Methane scales up the physical remediation of legacy well sites

While international gas producers optimise their certification processes, Zefiro Methane focuses on eliminating legacy environmental contamination in the US. Through its subsidiary, Plants & Goodwin, the company plugs orphaned oil and gas wells across 15 US states. Pennsylvania illustrates the market's scale. The state's Department of Environmental Protection has documented over 27,000 orphaned wells, with more than USD 2.1 billion in federal funding available to plug them. On October 21, the Pennsylvania government celebrated the decommissioning of the 500th orphaned well under the current administration. Zefiro Methane is meanwhile strengthening its market position through targeted acquisitions and the deployment of its own equipment. Just days after reaching a milestone in Pennsylvania, the company announced three additional framework agreements, bringing the total to seven since acquiring the Viking equipment in May. According to the company, these agreements cover nearly all major gas producers in the northeastern US. This development improves operational utilisation and strengthens the business beyond government tenders.

    Operational growth and fresh capital

To enable further growth, management also strengthened the capital base. On October 23, 2026, Zefiro Methane completed a private placement. The company raised around CAD 5.0 million, which is intended to fund working capital and potential acquisitions. Support comes from an order backlog of government-funded remediation projects worth around USD 40 million, extending through June 2029, supplemented by services for the private sector. In the financial year ended June 30, 2026, the gross margin increased from 23.0% to 29.2%, primarily due to improved utilisation of in-house capacity. With the acquired Viking equipment, Zefiro also aims to reduce its dependence on subcontractors and rented equipment.

    Conclusion: Analysts are optimistic

Demonstrating low methane losses is likely to increasingly become the entry ticket for American natural gas into the European market, while plugging orphaned wells in North America is becoming a lucrative infrastructure business. Zefiro Methane benefits directly from this trend and from government funding to reduce emissions. Analysts at GBC AG see strong arguments in the market's dynamic growth and the company's integrated platform, confirming their Buy rating with a price target of USD 1.50 (CAD 2.15) in their research report dated October 13, 2026. The research firm cites the operational turnaround, strong revenue visibility from multi-year government contracts, scalable capacity expansions and the high-margin additional option in carbon credits as further drivers of the share price.

The tungsten market is currently splitting into two distinct segments. While Chinese ammonium paratungstate (APT) prices are falling significantly, according to the Shanghai Metals Market, Western tungsten prices remain largely stable. Meanwhile, Washington's regulatory procurement requirements are forcing Western industrial companies to realign their supply chains. From 2027, new US legislation will prohibit the Department of Defense from using tungsten sourced from geopolitically sensitive countries such as China, Russia, Iran and North Korea. This legislation decouples Western prices from the Asian market and puts secure supply sources in sharper focus.

The logistics industry is currently facing an existential challenge characterised by sharply rising energy costs. According to the European Commission's Oil Bulletin, the average diesel price across the EU stood at EUR 2.136 per litre in mid-October, almost 40% higher than a year earlier. At the same time, the rollout of zero-emission infrastructure for heavy-duty transport is experiencing significant delays. As a result, solutions that reduce fuel consumption across existing fleets are becoming increasingly important for freight and logistics companies.

Conditions in the construction sector are gradually improving. A few days ago, Heidelberg Materials CEO Dominik von Achten told Reuters of tentative signs of recovery in the third quarter. Investments in energy infrastructure and data centres were slowly progressing. For industry, this is a welcome prospect. New infrastructure needs steel and concrete. At the same time, producers must reduce emissions without losing their competitiveness. This is precisely where the companies converge. Strategic Resources is planning a plant to produce high-quality iron ore pellets needed for lower-emission steel production. With the spin-off of its materials trading and logistics division, thyssenkrupp is taking another decisive step towards becoming a financial holding company. Heidelberg Materials already markets low-carbon cement but is grappling with several challenges. Who will turn these opportunities into rising share prices the fastest?
