The global power market is coming under pressure. AI data centres, electrification, and industry are driving demand, while new power plants and transmission lines often take years to complete. Reuters is already referring to a potential "power price supercycle". This is creating a new billion-dollar market for investors. Demand is not limited to additional solar and wind farms; more powerful grids and energy storage systems are also needed to distribute existing electricity more intelligently.

GE Vernova: Expanding in Venezuela and India

Energy security remains one of the most important challenges of our time. Companies are responding by pursuing new strategic directions. US energy company GE Vernova is one example, with developments in two different markets highlighting this trend.

The company is currently on the verge of signing new contracts in the Venezuelan energy sector. After several months of negotiations, the company is working with other international partners to finalize agreements to expand and modernize the local energy and power supply infrastructure. These developments are driven by recent changes in Venezuela's national legislation. These legal amendments will give foreign operators significant leeway in implementing their projects on the ground.

While other corporations involved in the talks focus primarily on direct oil production, GE Vernova's clear focus is on the fundamental rehabilitation and strengthening of the country's general power grids. These initiatives are being carried out as standalone projects and are independent of other recently negotiated energy agreements in the region.

In addition to developments in South America, GE Vernova's Indian subsidiary, GE Vernova T&D India, is involved in a major expansion of India's national power grid. In a bid issued by the Power Grid Corporation of India, the company is the lowest bidder for a new high-voltage direct-current transmission link. The planned transmission line route is expected to have a total capacity of 6,000 megawatts and aims to efficiently interconnect the Barmer II and South Kalamb regions. In this project, GE Vernova is responsible for the complete technical design, the supply of the necessary equipment, and the construction of two converter stations. Each facility is designed for a capacity of 3,000 MW. The project aims to transmit electricity from renewable energy sources over long distances with minimal transmission losses. The final contract has not yet been signed, as the client must complete internal reviews before formally awarding it.

NU E Power: Prominent Additions for the Next Stage of Development

NU E Power is strengthening its management team on two fronts. Peter Espig, a seasoned capital markets expert, has been appointed to the Board of Directors. As Nicola Mining's current CEO, Espig previously served, among other roles, as Vice President at Goldman Sachs Japan and was involved in private equity and pre-IPO transactions totaling more than CAD 2.0 billion. At the end of August, John Windsor took over as COO. He brings more than 20 years of experience with energy companies such as Algonquin Power, Northland Power, and Emera. NU E Power is therefore adding expertise in two key areas: project development and capital markets.

NU E Power sees itself less as a traditional electricity producer and more as an energy infrastructure developer: it secures land, then develops projects through permitting, grid connections, and power purchase agreements. NU E Power can then sell these projects, develop them with partners, or retain them as equity investments. The latter opens up the opportunity for recurring revenue in addition to potential sales proceeds.

The company appears to be in the right place at the right time. AI, data centres, and other electricity-intensive applications are driving energy demand skyward. Through a strategic partnership with Luxxfolio, NU E Power is now evaluating energy infrastructure solutions for data centres and digital asset mining. The Luxxfolio collaboration is an agreement to evaluate, and any specific arrangement is subject to further due diligence.

The company also strengthened its financial foundation. In August, it closed an oversubscribed private placement totaling CAD 3.86 million. The company noted in its second-quarter filing that it will need additional financing to fund ongoing operations and development activities. At the same time, the company signed a non-binding letter of intent with Proteus Power Developments LLC regarding the proposed acquisition of all the issued and outstanding shares of three Alberta project companies. Completion of the acquisition remains subject to seven conditions precedent.

This is increasingly creating a scalable development platform for a market with enormous capital requirements. If the company succeeds in bringing energy projects to monetization and generating recurring revenue, the digital economy's enormous electricity demand could become a key growth driver.

Sunrun: A Dual Strategy for the Energy Transition

Sunrun is one of the largest US providers of residential solar and battery storage systems, handling the planning, installation, financing, and maintenance of these systems. Its business model relies heavily on long-term subscriptions, while Sunrun also pools connected home batteries into virtual power plants, providing services to power grids and utilities. To facilitate the distribution of decentralized energy, the company has announced two new partnerships.

As part of a new partnership with the service provider Voltus, Sunrun will supply power to large data centres, which primarily need it to run computationally intensive IT systems. To do this, the company draws on its network of residential solar systems and home batteries in select grid regions across the US. The energy generated by households and stored in the batteries is aggregated and drawn upon to meet the high power demands of the IT infrastructure. This approach also helps stabilize public power grids, as the electricity is supplied in a decentralized manner. End customers who make their residential storage capacity available for this program receive financial compensation to incentivize them to provide the infrastructure.

In addition, Sunrun is participating in a pilot project in California that is testing energy distribution at the regional level. Together with Google, Tesla, and the local utility PG&E, the company is establishing a virtual power plant in Santa Clara and Alameda counties. The project is fully funded by Google and integrates private technologies such as home storage systems, controllable household appliances, and modern heat pumps.

In total, the plan is to integrate approximately 21,000 flexibly controllable devices. When overall electricity demand in the region rises sharply, the control system draws on these networked resources. Storage systems then cover household electricity consumption or shift it to off-peak hours to maintain local grid stability.

Rising electricity demand is reshaping the entire value chain. GE Vernova is benefiting from grid expansion, while Sunrun is combining solar systems and battery storage into virtual power plants. NU E Power is already focusing on the development of new generation capacity. If the company succeeds in developing approved and financeable projects, the still-small project developer could play an increasingly important role in the growing race to secure additional power capacity.

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence is driving unprecedented demand for electricity and pushing even the power grids of industrialized nations to their limits. In the past, data centres required relatively manageable amounts of capacity; today, modern facilities demand grid connections on the scale of around 1,000 MW. Canada is becoming a focus for technology companies due to its cool climate and vast expanses of land. However, regional power grids are struggling to cope with this additional load. This is creating fierce competition for energy, grid connections, and even land. We examine this trend and the companies involved in this evolving energy landscape.

Extremely high volatility — and almost every day. Iran threatens escalation, pushing oil prices higher, while Donald Trump publicly dreams of a quick peace deal, which could, in turn, push oil prices lower. Yesterday, however, Brent crude was trading at nearly USD 107 per barrel. Billions of dollars are being made in this back-and-forth by trading desks that operate largely outside the public eye, while questionable market activity is, of course, scrutinized mainly when it involves the average retail investor. The stock market has become a mirror reflecting just how much the world has changed. Autocratic rulers dictate the direction of attention and increasingly shape how societies interact. In the past, wars were waged over religious differences and territorial claims; today, economic interests clearly dominate, with everything else often serving as a pretext. After all, only countries close to the oil reserves have a direct interest in keeping oil prices high. Interestingly, over the past four years, the United States has risen to become the world's largest oil producer, ahead of Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Canada. Several stocks have significant exposure to these developments, particularly in the aviation and travel sectors. As always, the issue comes down to steadily rising costs. For speculative investors, some of the key players are worth a closer look.

Contrarian investors, take note! An exciting opportunity may currently be emerging at Volatus Aerospace. Drone stocks continue to struggle on the stock market. However, the industry's long-term outlook remains positive in both the military and civilian sectors. While Volatus shares are consolidating, positive news continues to flow with new orders and technological advances. Micron Technology has also delivered strong news. Its record figures for 2026 exceeded estimates. The outlook is also positive. Can this dispel investors' skepticism regarding the sustainability of growth and margins? A sign of weakness or a bold move? This question arises with BioNTech in light of the permanent closure of three sites. The media response has been largely critical. However, there are also positive comments.
