Raised in Giessen, Hesse, Matthias Schomber discovered his passion for the financial markets as early as the 1990s—at a time when stock trading was still largely the domain of true, die-hard traders. After completing his banking apprenticeship, he worked for a private bank there and witnessed the rise and fall of the Neuer Markt firsthand on the trading floor of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, drawing lessons from the experience that continue to shape his thinking as a trader, author, and trading system developer to this day.

The invisible enemy lurks in nature

When adventurers, tourists or hikers explore the seemingly almost limitless expanses of American national parks, they expect unspoilt nature, fresh air and absolute tranquillity. It is all the more surprising when an eerie hiss suddenly rises from the ground, not from a wild animal, but from a historical environmental sin. Millions of orphaned and abandoned oil and gas wells lie beneath North American soil, releasing tonnes of climate-damaging methane into the atmosphere every day, completely unchecked.

These almost invisible underground time bombs were long considered an insoluble problem. Today, however, stricter environmental regulations and policy requirements are changing how this problem is viewed and demanding solutions. Remediating this legacy contamination is very much a market of the future. Experts estimate the total addressable market for remediating this legacy contamination at a massive USD 500 billion, creating an almost inexhaustible field of activity for specialist service providers.

As mentioned earlier, regulatory pressure also drives this trend, reflected in government programmes such as the US Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). This legislation alone has made around USD 4.7 billion available to systematically plug orphaned wells and protect the environment. While many green start-ups fail because of high barriers to entry and a lack of funding, Zefiro Methane operates in an environment where government budgets have already been firmly allocated and can also be drawn on. The company benefits from its strong market position and its ability to repeatedly secure contracts as a reliable partner even in particularly sensitive natural areas such as Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

    Top business model

One pillar, which some would describe as the company's backbone, is its wholly owned subsidiary, Plants and Goodwin, which has more than fifty years of operating history in the long-established Appalachian Basin. The overall business model rests on several revenue streams that provide healthy diversification. These include government-funded programmes to decommission orphaned wells, direct contracts with private energy operators, professional measurement and monitoring of methane emissions, and carbon credit generation. Zefiro covers virtually the entire life cycle of a well, from analysis to complete restoration, from a single source, thereby creating added value for many companies, people, nature and, of course, itself.

The latest financial figures for the financial year ended June 30, 2026, show this operational upswing and the company's improved profitability in black and white. Annual revenue climbed almost 31% to USD 42.5 million from USD 32.4 million in the previous financial year. Profit improved even more, with gross profit jumping 66% to USD 12.4 million and the gross margin widening from 23% to just over 29%. Although the company still recorded a net loss of USD 3.5 million, this was noticeably reduced, also pointing to an operational turnaround. The company has now grown quite considerably. Its workforce and equipment include 147 qualified employees, 25 drilling rigs, 14 wireline units and 6 cementing spreads. A newly announced government order backlog of around USD 40 million, contractually extending through June 2029, also provides a sound basis for future planning.

    Technical analysis and investment thesis

This operational development has already drawn stock market attention in recent months. After rising from around CAD 0.20 in October 2025, the stock climbed to a peak of CAD 0.80 by May 2026. Since then, a healthy, textbook correction has offset this steep rise, with the current share price at around CAD 0.66. On the downside, the stock is supported fairly reliably by a stable horizontal range between CAD 0.50 and CAD 0.60. From a technical perspective, attention is now turning to the area between CAD 0.69 and CAD 0.70, as a move above this level would mark a successful breakout.

If this breakthrough succeeds, fresh momentum could quickly take the share towards its previous high of CAD 0.80, above which the path to the psychologically important CAD 1.00 mark should be largely clear. The investment thesis is further supported by the ongoing construction boom in industrial facilities and data centres, as developers are not permitted to build on land with unplugged legacy wells and therefore depend urgently on providers such as Zefiro. This makes the company more than a beneficiary of government decarbonisation funding; it is an increasingly important infrastructure service provider in a niche that will continue to see strong demand.

A chart breakout above the resistance zone is now possible at any time!
A chart breakout above the resistance zone is now possible at any time!

    Conclusion

Zefiro Methane combines a fairly crisis-resistant, rapidly growing core business in methane reduction with a healthy order book and an attractive technical position. A breakout from the consolidation pattern could occur if the CAD 0.70 mark is exceeded. The company impresses with solid financials, government-backed revenue, and an excellent position in a future market worth billions.

Artificial intelligence, a new generation of nuclear reactors, and the transformation of our energy supply are among the biggest investment themes of the coming decades. Billions are flowing into data centres and new power plants, while the legacy of the old energy world must also be addressed. After all, a clean future is not created by new technologies alone. Orphaned oil and gas wells, methane emissions, and contaminated sites must also be factored in. At these intersections, new markets and companies are emerging that provide solutions for tomorrow's infrastructure.

The European Commission plans to postpone the proposed methane reporting requirements for oil and gas imports by one year. Member states and the European Parliament must still approve this. Regardless, the market for remediating orphaned wells is growing in the US. Specialized service providers are plugging dilapidated production wells, largely financed through government programs. Regulation is by no means the only driver: Methane continuously escapes from countless abandoned wells, creating local pressure to act. We explain the situation and highlight the companies profiting from it.

The energy world turned its attention to London just a few days ago for the Energy Intelligence Forum. The message from the Thames was hardly encouraging for either industry or households. Amin Nasser, CEO of Saudi Aramco, emphasized that even after the Strait of Hormuz is fully reopened, it could take up to two years to rebuild global oil and diesel inventories to normal levels. The fact that global inventories of crude oil and refined products, particularly diesel, are at dangerously low levels is becoming increasingly apparent at the pump. But two years also means that the oil and refining industries could have a prolonged period of strong earnings ahead. This is especially relevant as Ukraine is currently inflicting significant damage on Russian refineries. Against this backdrop, investors should consider how to position themselves for the years ahead. Today, we take a closer look at opportunities across the oil market, from the clean-up specialist Zefiro Methane and refining giant Shell to French energy champion TotalEnergies.
