The cannons are thundering, and gold and silver remain in demand! Barrick, Newmont, Desert Gold and SMT Scharf in focus

The overnight attack by Iran on Israel underscores the current geopolitical uncertainty. Regardless of whether there is further escalation in the Middle East, the world has already changed dramatically since February 2022. This includes shifts in investor behavior. Until the first quarter of 2024, shares in the artificial intelligence and high-tech sectors were bullish; now, defense stocks and precious metals are on the agenda. After decades of disarmament, NATO, in particular, is now facing a decade of rearmament, and private investors are expressing their restraint in consumption by increasing their focus on private security. This is reflected in the increased purchases of gold and silver. For years, precious metals have been stable guarantors of the daily dwindling purchasing power. We believe that the new valuation cycle in the commodities sector is only just beginning, which is why we are examining favorable entry opportunities.

First Majestic Silver, Desert Gold, Albemarle - Escalation paves the way

The events at the weekend, during which Iran carried out a massive airstrike on Israel for the first time, are likely to have escalated the already troubled geopolitics to a new level. It is not yet known whether Israel is planning a counter-attack. Precious metals gold and silver are once again likely to benefit from the uncertainties following the rather weak close to the week. The yellow precious metal could recapture the USD 2,400 per ounce mark, which could also boost the shares of producers and gold exploration companies.

Threat to Europe, Demand for Defense Persists! Rheinmetall, Almonty Industries, Renk and Hensoldt

  • Defense

Europe is gearing up, as since February 24, 2022, peace has become a thing of the past. Europe lived in harmony for a whole 77 years, with the exception of the warlike dissolution of Yugoslavia as a regional conflict. Today's world resembles the situation in the 1970s and 1980s, as the Iron Curtain is re-establishing itself as a political border. The old world order that has prevailed since the end of the Cold War has been shattered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Consequently, NATO has regained a new role; after years of disarmament, it has now become a sought-after defense alliance. The accession of Finland and Sweden now strengthens the alliance towards the east. What now looms large is rapid rearmament! Where can investors still participate?

Panic at AIXTRON and NEL! Is Kraken Energy an AI beneficiary?

AIXTRON shares lost more than 5% yesterday. In addition to the price slide on the NASDAQ, a negative analyst comment added to the negative sentiment. Both the rating and target price of the AIXTRON share were significantly reduced. The same applies to Nel. The hydrogen specialist's recovery attempt was mercilessly stifled, and the share lost over 15%. The lack of incoming orders, in particular, is making analysts nervous. In contrast, Kraken Energy could soon be seen as an AI beneficiary. After all, Elon Musk is not the only one warning of an energy crisis and calling for the expansion of nuclear energy. Voices are getting louder that the computing power required for artificial intelligence will cause energy consumption to explode. In order to prevent a blackout, many countries are turning to nuclear power.

Out of defense, into gold!? Renk, Barrick Gold, Desert Gold

On Tuesday, German defense stocks were shaken briefly and sharply. In a flash crash, Renk, Rheinmetall and Hensoldt fell by more than 10%. This indicates that defense stocks have run hot. The future prospects for the companies are undeniably positive, but a consolidation is in order. Gold is an entirely different story. The price of the precious metal is at record levels, but the shares of gold producers are still a long way from their 2020 highs. This applies to the heavyweights like Barrick Gold and Endeavour Mining, but even more so to the explorers. One of the promising explorers is Desert Gold. The Company operates in an attractive region, is on the verge of becoming a Tier 1 mine producer, and is a takeover candidate. Barrick Gold is one of many companies that could make a move on Desert Gold.

After a successful first quarter of 2024, the DAX and Dow Jones took a well-deserved breather last week. In contrast, the precious metal markets for gold and silver continued their upward trend. Gold also reached new absolute highs of USD 2,354 per ounce. While gold producers such as Barrick Gold and Newmont remained in hibernation, they have been following the rising base price for several weeks now. There is currently also an opportunity for smaller commodity stocks to participate disproportionately in the upward trend.

Geopolitical uncertainties - Sibanye Stillwater, Saturn Oil + Gas and Barrick Gold benefit

In addition to the stock markets, which reached new highs last week, the direction of precious metals and oil is also clearly pointing upward. While gold also reached a new all-time high, silver has significant catch-up potential compared to its big brother. In the case of black gold, the current uncertain geopolitical situation could cause oil prices to break through the USD 100 per barrel barrier once again.

Desert Gold Ventures, Barrick, Intel - Stagflation in the US as a gold price turbo?

  • Technology

Gold has reached another record level of over USD 2,300 per ounce. Investors are betting that the US Federal Reserve will cut interest rates later this year. Gold has been on an upward trend since mid-February. On the one hand, it has a reputation for maintaining or increasing its value during periods of inflation. On the other hand, it is seen as a store of value should FIAT money be significantly devalued - after all, gold has been considered a currency for millennia. For Desert Gold Ventures, the timing is right to complete its exploration drilling program in Africa. Demand for the precious metal is unabated. These are good times for gold explorers and producers. Barrick CEO Mark Bristow suspects stagflation in the US, which will further drive up the price of gold. Declining economy and rising inflation? It is not a suitable environment for US companies. One company seemingly lagging behind is Intel. The Company issued a profit warning this week. We take a look at what this means for investors.

Ballard Power, Saturn Oil + Gas, and Siemens Energy - Three energy companies on course for growth. Who offers the greatest potential return?

Fuel cells, oil and gas, grid technologies and onshore wind power - there are many opportunities for investors to invest in energy companies. But which segment offers significant return potential? Berkshire Hathaway is focusing on oil and gas companies such as Occidental Petroleum. A Canadian company in the same segment is Saturn Oil & Gas. The Company made it into the top 20 fastest-growing companies in Canada last year and pursues a transparent growth strategy focusing on value creation for its shareholders. Ballard Power Systems creates fuel cells, relies heavily on government support and has raised USD 94 million for the construction of its new fuel cell plant in Texas. Siemens Energy, in turn, released its financial figures for the first quarter of this year. Until now, the spectre of Siemens Gamesa has been haunting the ranks, but the latest results are surprising...

Despite recent declines in electric mobility, the development of traction batteries is breaking new ground. Sodium is under discussion to replace toxic lithium. The new technologies also mean that cobalt and nickel are no longer required. Former lithium companies are changing their business models, but the raw material will still be urgently needed for at least another decade. We are looking at a market that is about to change course. Where do the opportunities lie for agile investors?
