The "Magnificent Seven" Stumble, Dragging the S&P 500 Lower; Oil Tops USD 90; VIX Surges – Barrick Mining, Deutsche Börse, DRC Gold, Alphabet, Tesla
Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla make up the "Magnificent Seven" and account for roughly one-third of the S&P 500's market capitalization. When two of these heavyweights, Alphabet and Tesla, come under pressure, the broader market feels the impact. Their declines alone shaved around 0.6% off the S&P 500, while the VIX volatility index surged by as much as 17%. Meanwhile, WTI crude oil climbed nearly 5% to above USD 90 per barrel, boosting energy stocks such as Chevron and ExxonMobil. Industrial names, including Caterpillar and Deere, also gained ground. Gold and silver prices also stabilized after recent weakness, while government bonds came under renewed selling pressure as rising inflation expectations pushed yields higher.

Deutsche Börse, wallstreet:online, ThyssenKrupp - Better than expected
The earnings season is currently at its peak. Munich-based technology giant Siemens significantly exceeded analysts' expectations for sales and operating profit in the first quarter of fiscal 2021/22. The wholesale group Metro was also able to significantly increase sales and earnings thanks to the all-important Christmas business. On the technology stock side, Google parent Alphabet was celebrated. There are good conditions for further rising stock markets.

At the latest, after the inflation figures for November, every investor should have become aware that inflation will not only remain short-term due to the Corona effect but much longer than expected. So, what to do when the savings in your account are losing more and more value year after year. Investment alternatives to protect against inflation are precious metals and the still controversial Bitcoin. Despite the current weakness of the two asset classes, there is probably no way around rising quotations in the long term - time to position yourself anticyclically.
