Baker Hughes, Zefiro Methane, Clean Harbors: America's Dirty Legacy Is Becoming a Gold Mine
Created and Published on Behalf of Zefiro Methane Corp.
America's energy boom has a costly downside. While billions are being invested in new gas infrastructure, power plants and data centres, hundreds of thousands of orphaned oil and gas wells continue to pose environmental risks. Many of these abandoned wells leak methane, a potent greenhouse gas that is particularly damaging to the climate. At the same time, regulators are tightening requirements for industrial companies to address their environmental liabilities. This is creating a market in which major energy technology companies and established environmental services providers can benefit. Specialist companies that permanently plug abandoned wells are also attracting increasing attention.

Baker Hughes: AI Power Demand Fuels Billion-Dollar Opportunities
The US economy's hunger for energy is creating new business opportunities for Baker Hughes. In the past trading week, the US energy technology group announced an expanded collaboration with Venture Global and GE Vernova. Together, the companies aim to enable up to 16 new power generation units to supply electricity to LNG facilities and, in the future, possibly neighbouring data centres. Baker Hughes will supply gas turbines, control technology and electrical integration systems, among other things. Baker Hughes expects initial orders by the end of 2026, with potential deliveries scheduled from 2028 through 2034.
Baker Hughes is one of the world's leading providers of technologies and services for the oil and gas industry. Its business spans drilling and production technology, LNG facilities and industrial energy solutions. The growing link between conventional energy infrastructure and rising electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence is supporting the business.
The new agreement with Venture Global is initially a framework agreement and not yet a fully called-off order worth billions. Nevertheless, it shows the scale that the expansion of decentralised power supply could reach.
Analysts also see upside potential. Stifel reaffirmed its Buy recommendation with a price target of USD 75. Based on the reference share price of USD 54.40, this represents theoretical upside potential of around 38%. Morgan Stanley also reiterated its Buy rating and a price target of USD 70 on October 14.
The next catalysts could come as early as October 27, when Baker Hughes presents its quarterly results. The key will be how quickly the group can convert the rising demand for energy infrastructure into additional orders and profits.
Zefiro Methane: Record Revenue and a Billion-Dollar Market for Methane Remediation
Zefiro Methane is increasingly becoming a major specialist in the remediation of orphaned oil and gas wells in the US. Through its subsidiary, Plants & Goodwin, the company plugs orphaned wells, prevents methane leaks and provides technical services related to decommissioning and land reclamation. The market is enormous, with around two million improperly plugged inactive oil and gas wells in the US, according to research firm GBC AG.
Zefiro Methane's latest annual results show how rapidly the business is growing. In the 2026 financial year, Zefiro increased revenue by 31.1% to a record USD 42.5 million. Gross profit rose 66% to USD 12.4 million. Adjusted EBITDA also improved significantly. After a USD 4.0 million loss last year, Zefiro now generated a USD 3.8 million profit. At the same time, the net loss narrowed by 67.5% to USD 3.5 million.
Additional growth is secured. In Ohio, a state-funded remediation contract worth USD 19.6 million is under way. This is supplemented by another contract worth USD 11.5 million running through June 2029. Through the acquisition of equipment from Viking Well Service, Zefiro also added five additional drilling rigs and can expand its activities into further US states.
Analysts are also providing support. GBC reaffirmed its Buy recommendation with a price target of USD 1.50 (CAD 2.15) by June 2027. For the 2028/29 financial year, the experts already expect revenue of USD 75.21 million and EBITDA of USD 15.04 million.
The conditions for further growth are in place. The key now will be to utilise the new capacity, execute the major contracts profitably and turn positive adjusted EBITDA into sustainably rising profits.
Clean Harbors: USD 775 Million to Fund Further Growth
Clean Harbors is expanding its leading position in the North American environmental services market through the acquisitions of EnviroServe and ES&H for a combined USD 775 million. This expands the company's capacity in hazardous waste disposal, industrial cleaning and environmental incident response. EnviroServe's expanded network of sites is expected to attract new customers and increase waste disposal volumes.
The Massachusetts-headquartered group is one of North America's largest specialist environmental services providers. Its business includes the treatment and disposal of hazardous industrial waste, emergency responses to pollution incidents and the processing and recycling of used industrial oils.
On October 13, Clean Harbors also published its 2026 sustainability report. According to its own calculations, the company avoided more than twice as many greenhouse gas emissions through its services in 2025 as were generated by its own operations. The metric illustrates the importance of the environmental solutions offered, but is based on the company's calculation methodology.
The expansion strategy is well received by analysts. TD Cowen raised the price target from USD 380 to USD 390 and reaffirmed its Buy recommendation. The experts expect additional waste disposal volumes from the reshoring of industrial production to the US and the expansion of data centres. Citigroup raised its price target to USD 378 a day later and also maintained its Buy rating.
Bank of America also sees further potential. The analysts raised their 2026 EBITDA estimate to USD 1.42 billion, slightly above the company's guidance at the time.
With the latest acquisitions, Clean Harbors has additional growth opportunities. The quarterly results on October 28 should show whether these can quickly translate into higher margins and profits.
Conclusion
Baker Hughes benefits from the multibillion-dollar expansion of American energy infrastructure. Clean Harbors is strengthening its market position through acquisitions and rising demand for environmental services. Developments at Zefiro Methane are particularly exciting. Record revenue, positive adjusted EBITDA and major government contracts show that the remediation of orphaned oil and gas wells has long since become a significant business segment. If it succeeds in utilising the additional drilling capacity profitably, Zefiro could be on the verge of its next growth phase.
