Scientists broadly agree that methane is one of the most climate-damaging greenhouse gases. Cattle farming and landfills are considered among the largest sources of emissions. However, the oil industry also plays a role, particularly in the United States, where millions of orphaned and abandoned oil and gas wells release methane uncontrollably. Zefiro Methane has built a business model around addressing this problem. Its order pipeline is well filled, and the outlook appears promising.

    The Legacy of Industrialisation

An oil company simply disappearing without cleaning up the traces of its work was apparently commonplace in the United States. 200 years of industrialisation and energy production have left their mark on the natural environment there. The legacy of many small oil and gas companies consists of production facilities that were never properly plugged. These wells still release large quantities of methane into the atmosphere, the most potent greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. Emissions result from simple leaks, material defects or simply poor workmanship.

The United States alone is estimated to have at least two million abandoned oil and gas wells. Catherine Flax, CEO of Zefiro Methane, puts the figure even higher, at up to three million wells. The Canadian company specialises in plugging these wells. Zefiro deploys its own specialists and equipment to permanently plug leaks using cement and specialised sealing materials. The publicly listed company is not necessarily operating in a niche market. Government authorities have increasingly recognised the scale of the problem, prompting initiatives at both state and federal levels to accelerate well plugging. To date, more than USD 4.5 billion has been allocated to fund contracts for companies carrying out this work.

    Zefiro's Order Books Are Full

Zefiro Methane appears to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of these initiatives, as reflected in the recently published order book figures. The company's backlog of "awarded government well-plugging projects" now stands at approximately USD 40 million. The orders extend through June 2029. For comparison, the company's current market capitalisation is approximately USD 50 million, equivalent to only a fraction of the value of the contracts already secured.

The order backlog reflects only government-funded projects and excludes work for corporate clients. These clients come from the oil and gas industry. Zefiro has also secured a survey contract for work in south-eastern Ohio. This involves examining the condition of orphaned wells before they are plugged. CEO Catherine Flax noted in a statement that this order backlog is not yet reflected in the company's previously reported results.

    AI Hyperscalers: Time Is Money!

Alongside its traditional customers, Zefiro Methane has built up additional business lines. Abandoned and orphaned wells are sometimes discovered during the construction of AI data centres, and Zefiro steps in like an emergency response team to resolve the problem quickly. These massive infrastructure projects involve billions in investment. Any delay therefore costs a correspondingly large amount of money. Zefiro Methane is also tapping into the carbon credit market. The company measures the amount of methane that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere without its intervention. It then converts the results into carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e) in accordance with recognised standards. For each tonne of CO₂ equivalent emissions prevented, Zefiro can receive a tradable carbon credit, which its trading division then sells to large corporations, energy companies and financial institutions.

Since May, Zefiro Methane's shares have been trending lower amid a challenging market environment. The latest announcements may signal a potential reversal.

    Zefiro Shares: Analysts Are Bullish

Just as Zefiro Methane's business model remains largely unknown, its shares are also still flying under the radar of many investors. This offers opportunities for long-term investors. However, the publication of the large order pipeline a few days ago has already given the shares a boost. The downward trend that has persisted since May may have been broken. GBC Research analysts expect revenue and earnings to grow strongly in the coming years, particularly as Zefiro is among the pioneers in this billion-dollar market. They recommend buying the shares and have set a price target of CAD 1.50. According to GBC Research, this implies the potential for the stock to more than double.

The Big Turnaround: Could Adidas and Nike Still Make a Comeback? RE Royalties Surprises with Innovative Financing Deals

This leap backfired! Anyone looking at share price performance in the sporting goods industry will recognise a radical shift. The reason the former champions of sport are coming under increasing pressure lies in their traditional way of selling products. Today, a great trainer sells not only through compelling quality, which can sometimes come at a price, but also through emotion, environmental protection and conviction. Ultimately, industry giants relied on their retro products for too long, opening the door for aggressive challenger brands. The innovative newcomers combine athleticism with sustainability arguments and are adapting their production chains to a discerning, young customer base. New adhesives or recycled plastic reuse win at the checkout. Canadian company RE Royalties, which has established itself as a pioneer in royalty-based financing in the renewable energy sector, is also delivering genuine surprises. By opening up an entirely new line of business, the company offers tailored capital structures specifically aimed at decarbonising large industrial groups. Ultimately, this development shows that environmental responsibility and financial returns no longer have to be at odds.

Environmental damage often occurs quickly, but remedying it costs time and money. Environmental Action Germany reported on 13 October that inspections in September had found uncontrolled methane leaks at gas facilities in northern Germany, western Germany and the Netherlands. The environmental campaigners see these as possible breaches of the EU Methane Regulation. Such reports are likely to spur operators into action. Those who decommission facilities, decontaminate legacy sites, plug orphaned wells or recover energy from waste could benefit. If successful, cleaning up becomes a business. We therefore take a closer look at Bilfinger, Zefiro Methane and Waste Management.
