For many years now, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has been selecting the 50 most innovative companies in the world. A few days ago, the hit list was published for the sixteenth time. The top ranks are occupied by Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet and Tesla. German companies are only found with Siemens from rank 20. Innovations play an important role for investors because they enable competitive advantages, which sooner or later translates into rising share prices. But global companies are not always the only ones to be considered; it is often lucrative to look at the second tier.

On Wednesday, the German indices began with a positive sign. The German benchmark index DAX is currently quoted at a level of 16,004 points and thus around 0.04% slightly up. The companies in the second tier can also hold their ground and the MDAX last traded at 34,864 points (+0.26%), TexDAX at 3,644 points and thus 0.60% lower than the previous day. SDAX also loses and last traded at 15,969 points (-0.23%).

Troilus Gold, Valneva, Moderna, BioNTech - Where will these stocks be in 2022?
The winners in the 2021 investment year have undeniably been the hydrogen, lithium and vaccine stocks. They temporarily gained up to 2,000% but also corrected by more than 50% in some cases. These value developments were not always fundamentally justified. Often the assumption of future achievements was sufficient for a corresponding positive development. In the case of the vaccine manufacturers, the stock market players' fantasies were fulfilled; in the case of hydrogen, this statement was valid at least for a 3-month window at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, the year was disappointing for most gold explorers, as the precious yellow metal was unable to capitalize on the great uncertainty since the outbreak of the pandemic with a price increase. But this could change in 2022 ad hoc!

As a result of the torn supply chains and the semiconductor crisis, chip manufacturers are posting record results due to sharply increased prices. Inflation combined with the current low interest rate environment is, in turn, fodder for gold companies. Profit from this cycle.

Now the chaos is perfect. According to studies, the preparation from BioNTech/Pfizer is one of the most effective vaccines against the coronavirus. Hundreds of millions of doses have already been administered worldwide. However, the number of COVID infections is currently through the roof. Even those who have been vaccinated twice are likely still not sufficiently protected against infection. There are also unsettling rumors from BioNTech about irregularities in the conduct of studies during the vaccine's approval. Whether it concerns thereby only "rumors" or "provable facts", the capital investors do not care for the time being. The Delta variant is teaching the markets to be afraid. After the economy was humming in the past two quarters, disillusionment is now slowly setting in. The unexpectedly weak labor market data in the US in August demonstrated this. Outside of agriculture, only 235,000 new jobs were created compared with the forecast of 728,000 new jobs. Thus, the market's fear of an end to loose monetary policy and possible interest rate hikes should also be off the table.

Globally, infection numbers are rising dramatically due to the highly contagious Delta variant. According to the RKI, 12,626 new infections were reported in Germany alone, 4,226 more than a week ago. With the incidence rising above the authoritative level of 35, greater emphasis is again being placed on the rule, vaccinated, recovered or tested. As a result, demand for PCR or rapid tests is skyrocketing. Diagnostic companies, like vaccine producers, are in for a warm cash shower.

The price development of many biotech stocks over the past few months has been breathtaking. Investors are advised to focus on the frontrunners, as the market position gained as a first mover, the leadership position in a niche or innovative solution, will enable the companies to keep their competitors at bay for a long time to come.
