Drones have transformed modern warfare, and now the next phase is beginning. Instead of individual high-tech systems, the focus is increasingly on low costs, high volumes, and rapidly scalable production capacities. Billions are flowing into autonomous aircraft, reconnaissance, and new propulsion systems. At the same time, manufacturers are expanding their factories or acquiring additional capacity. Three companies are positioning themselves for the defence market, where scale and speed are becoming increasingly important.

Drones have evolved from a niche product into one of the defence industry's most important future markets. Billions are pouring into autonomous reconnaissance systems, combat drones, and modern defence technologies. While established US corporations are winning ever-larger government contracts, a Canadian challenger, backed by civilian cash flow, NATO business, and new production capacity, could be on the verge of its next growth spurt.

The Billion-Dollar Industry You Cannot Afford to Miss: DroneShield, Volatus Aerospace, and Kratos Defense

The era of weapon systems weighing several metric tons is coming to an end. Recent conflicts, from Ukraine to the Middle East, have elevated the drone from a tactical tool to a decisive factor in modern warfare. At the same time, more and more autonomous aerial vehicles are being deployed in the civilian sector, from inspecting critical infrastructure to logistics. Given that IDTechEx forecasts the market will double within a decade, the drone market should be at the top of investors' watch lists. Three companies could play a particularly decisive role in shaping this transformation: DroneShield, Volatus Aerospace, and Kratos Defense & Security Solutions.

Battery Crisis Threatens AeroVironment and Kratos Defence—How HPQ Silicon Could Benefit

It is wartime. Anyone aiming to dominate the skies must think beyond aerodynamics and sensor technology when it comes to drones. The greatest driver of innovation lies in the chemical composition of batteries. As demand for drones across commercial, industrial, and military applications continues to surge, conventional lithium-ion batteries are reaching their limits. The bottleneck lies in the material itself: graphite anodes result in shorter flight times and higher weight. To overcome these limitations, the industry is undergoing a paradigm shift toward silicon-based anodes. This technology significantly increases battery capacity and performance, enabling an entirely new generation of drone applications. We take a closer look at the technology behind this transformation and highlight several companies that stand to benefit.

Drones have become indispensable in modern warfare. That much is now clear. NATO and EU countries are therefore pooling considerable resources for unmanned systems: this year, NATO allies decided to increase defense spending to a total of 5% of economic output. Germany alone announced that it would invest EUR 10 billion in drones of all kinds in the coming years. These massive investments underscore that there is no way around drones. To ensure the supply of high-performance drones, battery technology is increasingly coming into focus. China dominates this field and has recently restricted military exports. The up-and-coming Canadian company NEO Battery Materials is closing the gap.

"Is war against Putin inevitable?" This was the headline in BILD yesterday in response to statements by military historian Sönke Neitzel on the ARD talk show Maischberger. According to Neitzel, Putin has already paved the way for war with his recent escalations. The historian asks: "If Putin is determined – many in NATO say so, and I would agree – will he wait until we can say that even the German Armed Forces now have enough drones? No, probably not." Neitzel believes that, due to the current poor equipment of many NATO countries, a military conflict between NATO and Russia could occur within the next three years. Investments in drones are therefore urgently needed. We present a battery supplier that offers tailor-made technology for drones, capable of drastically reducing the dependence of Western militaries on batteries from China.
