Stocks in sectors such as oil, gas, solar, and wind are currently benefiting massively from demand for decentralized energy solutions for AI data centres and the expansion of power grids driven by the electrification of society. But it can also work the other way around. After all, energy also leaves behind waste, and its byproducts must be cleaned up. That is why it is worth taking a closer look at Zefiro Methane. The company specializes in plugging abandoned and orphaned oil and gas wells across North America. Now, a major contract has given the Canadian company's stock a boost.

Zefiro Methane: Millions of Wells in Its Sights

Even investors looking to invest sustainably cannot ignore the oil industry. That is because it also offers opportunities for investors. Two hundred years of industrialization have left their mark on North America as well. Estimates suggest there are between two and four million orphaned or abandoned oil and gas wells in the United States alone. Companies abandoned them, went bankrupt, or simply moved on. What they left behind are production facilities that continue to release gas into the atmosphere. Among the emissions is methane, which is highly damaging to the climate. These emissions result from simple leaks, material defects, or simply poor workmanship.

Zefiro Methane specializes in precisely this type of leak and has developed its own technologies to address the problem. The company deploys its own teams and drilling rigs to permanently plug these leaks with cement and specialized sealants. Zefiro benefits from initiatives launched by US states and the federal government in Washington, which have brought the issue into focus. The federal legislation granted USD 4.7 billion to companies to remediate sites of potential methane leaks across the United States.

Major Contract in the Great Lakes Region

Zefiro Methane has now secured another project of this kind. The company reported an USD 11.5 million contract for a state-funded project in the Great Lakes region in the northeastern United States. The project will last about 2.5 years and run through June 2029. In an initial phase between November of this year and June 2027, the Canadian company will receive a first tranche of approximately USD 3 million. The remaining balance of USD 8.5 million will then be earned by June 2029. This not only expands Zefiro Methane's order book but also helps the company build further reputation in the market. In 2025, for example, the company received a USD 19.6 million contract from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. In total, Zefiro plugged more than 200 wells last year.

Data Centres as Another Growth Driver

Zefiro Methane's growth potential remains substantial. After all, thousands of additional wells are still waiting to be addressed. In addition, the company is increasingly being sought out as a partner for infrastructure projects, particularly in the construction of AI data centres. When abandoned wells are discovered on sites earmarked for these multibillion-dollar projects, action needs to be taken quickly, because given the scale of these projects, time is literally money. With a massive number of data centres expected to be built across the US in the coming years, Zefiro could also secure many contracts in this area.

The CO₂ Credit Market as a Source of Revenue

According to the company, the market itself is valued at around USD 400 billion. Zefiro Methane, however, earns revenue not only by plugging the orphaned wells but also through CO₂ credits, known as carbon credits. This involves measuring the amount of methane that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere without intervention. Based on this data, the results are converted into CO₂ equivalents under officially recognized standards. For every metric ton of CO₂ equivalent prevented, Zefiro receives a tradable CO₂ certificate, which is then sold through its own trading division to large corporations, energy companies, and financial institutions. In addition, Zefiro is banking on growth driven by strong partners. Just a few weeks ago, the company announced a strategic partnership with the Well Done Foundation. This nonprofit organization specializes in plugging abandoned oil and gas wells. Zefiro also reported receiving a contract from the NGO, though it did not disclose the amount.

Major Contract Sends Stock Higher – Breakout Ahead?

Zefiro Methane's stock surged sharply on its home exchange following the announcement of the latest major contract. This could be just the beginning of a larger upward trend, as Zefiro currently has a market capitalization of approximately EUR 42 million. In the bigger picture, the stock is still consolidating after its steep rise in the spring. The latest upward spike could now be the start of a breakout.
In any case, the research firm GBC is bullish on the stock. Analysts have set a price target of 2.12 CAD. This would give the stock the potential to triple in value!

With its recent rise, the stock has broken out of its consolidation phase!

Zefiro Methane combines environmental protection and sustainability with the potential for earnings growth in the years ahead. For investors, this presents an opportunity to participate in the company's expansion while benefiting from a market driven by regulation and the need to address the legacy of oil and gas production.

America's energy boom has a costly downside. While billions are being invested in new gas infrastructure, power plants and data centres, hundreds of thousands of orphaned oil and gas wells continue to pose environmental risks. Many of these abandoned wells leak methane, a potent greenhouse gas that is particularly damaging to the climate. At the same time, regulators are tightening requirements for industrial companies to address their environmental liabilities. This is creating a market in which major energy technology companies and established environmental services providers can benefit. Specialist companies that permanently plug abandoned wells are also attracting increasing attention.

Zefiro Methane: Over 200% Upside and a P/E Ratio of 10 – Is the Stock Undervalued?

Over 200% upside potential at a P/E ratio of just 10? Analysts consider Zefiro Methane's shares significantly undervalued. The company has already delivered record revenue, an operational turnaround and a substantial order pipeline. And this may only be the beginning. Zefiro protects people and the environment from hazardous pollutants and climate-damaging methane emissions. In the US alone, the remediation market is estimated at around USD 500 billion. Major government contracts provide strong revenue visibility, while the AI boom provides an additional growth driver. Zefiro aims to become the market leader through organic growth and acquisitions. Most recently, its CEO made a strong impression at an investor conference, outlining her confidence that Zefiro can reach USD 100 million in revenue. Yet the shares have not gained significant momentum so far. Could this present a buying opportunity?

The energy sector is currently a key driver in global stock markets. The oil industry is facing supply constraints, while petroleum products such as kerosene and diesel are in short supply and expensive. The geopolitical situation, with conflicts in the Persian Gulf and between Russia and Ukraine, is adding to the challenges facing industrial and household consumers. At the same time, the expansion of data centres is placing enormous demands on power infrastructure, particularly on the ageing electricity grid in the United States. These developments are reshaping the operating environment for energy companies. This article examines Shell, NU E Power and Chevron and their respective positions in the changing energy landscape.
