International capital markets are currently caught between macroeconomic headwinds from sharply rising interest rates and lucrative, targeted opportunities. While restraint in corporate investment is forcing established providers to exercise strategic cost discipline, the global race for critical raw materials and key metals is driving exploration projects forward at a rapid pace. At the same time, a higher energy price environment and strategic gains from equity holdings at commodity producers are leading to surprisingly dynamic upward earnings revisions. Investors once again face the challenge of separating merely temporary one-off effects from sustainable operating earnings power.

Microsoft showed what a turnaround looks like in the summer. After a weak first half, strong annual results gave the shares a substantial boost. Tonight, the software giant must prove that the recovery is sustainable. Two other stocks could now be on the verge of a similar turnaround. Their price targets are around three times the current level. Meanwhile, German growth company innoscripta plunged by more than half following a raid but is already showing signs of recovery. CTS Eventim, the MDAX-listed ticketing company, has also moved beyond its recent lows. Both its CEO and an activist investor consider the stock severely undervalued.

A single Chinese automaker sold 180,700 new energy vehicles overseas in September. That accounts for about 39% of its sales, more than double the figure from a year earlier. Behind this growth lies a substantial demand for raw materials, including copper and nickel for batteries and electric motors, as well as platinum-group metals for catalytic converters in hybrid vehicles. Electricity is also essential to charge all these vehicles. This illustrates what supply chains must look like to keep electric vehicles running. This plays right into the hands of raw material producers and electricity generators. Today, we take a closer look at Power Metallic Mines, Siemens Energy and BYD.
