Central banks bought 321.2 tonnes of gold in the third quarter. That was 42% more than in the same period last year, the World Gold Council reported on November 3. Added to this were 211.2 tonnes of inflows into exchange-traded gold funds following outflows in the second quarter. Global mine production, by contrast, rose by just 3% to 1,070.9 tonnes over the same period. Producers have to deliver, and it takes years for a deposit to become a mine. After an all-time high of USD 5,589 in January 2026 and a correction to just below USD 4,000 in June, gold is once again trading well above that level, delivering high margins for producers. We examine the developments and highlight opportunities.
