Newmont's Production Decline and Barrick Mining's African Focus Fuel Interest in DRC Gold
Goldman Sachs analysts expect gold to reach USD 5,400 by the end of 2027, while J.P. Morgan, in a February note, even set a 2027 target of USD 6,300. This environment, coupled with US national debt exceeding USD 40 trillion, is supporting the gold price. At the same time, industry leaders such as Newmont are struggling with declining production volumes. This is forcing major mining companies to realign their strategies on the African continent, where project developers like DRC Gold, with exploration areas in the immediate vicinity, are coming into focus.

Barrick Mining Secures Its Presence in Africa
To secure its African presence, Barrick Mining announced a 15-year licence extension for the North Mara mine in Tanzania, according to a statement dated October 5. The gold giant has a market capitalisation of USD 66.8 billion. In the second quarter, the company exceeded market expectations with revenue of USD 5.29 billion and earnings per share of USD 0.82, according to its latest financial report. Gold production amounted to 796,000 ounces. Together with AngloGold Ashanti, Barrick Mining also operates the Kibali mine in Congo, which Barrick itself describes as Africa's largest and "greenest" gold mine. To meet its long-term production targets, the mining group is continuously seeking new resources in the immediate vicinity of its existing facilities.
Newmont Records Production Decline
As the market leader on the New York Stock Exchange, Newmont has a market capitalisation of USD 123.4 billion. In the second quarter, however, gold production fell to 1.29 million ounces from 1.48 million ounces in the previous year, partly due to seismic events at the Australian Cadia mine and lower ore grades in Ghana, Mexico and Peru. This output decline highlights pressure on major producers to act. Industry heavyweights depend on new ounces.
DRC Gold Positions Itself in the Kilo-Moto Belt
DRC Gold is a project developer focused on Africa, particularly the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with a market capitalisation of CAD 30 million. The company is led by President and CEO Klaus Eckhof, who has more than 30 years of industry experience, including over 20 years in the DRC, and who laid the foundations for what is now the major Kibali mine. DRC Gold's core project is an option to acquire up to a 65% interest in Giro Goldfields, the company behind the Giro Gold project and its Kebigada deposit. State-owned SOKIMO holds the remaining 35%. The transaction is still subject to shareholder and stock exchange approval. The area covers 497 km² and is strategically located, just 35 km west of the producing Kibali mine. Historical estimates put Kebigada's gold resources at 4.1 million ounces. S&P Global Ratings revised its outlook for the Democratic Republic of the Congo to positive in January. This mitigates perceived country risks and shifts investors' focus more towards the region's geological potential. DRC Gold plans extensive drilling programmes to verify the historical data in accordance with the NI 43-101 standard.
The historical estimate for Kebigada dates from 2020 and was prepared for the project's then owner, Amani Gold. It comprises 69.2 million tonnes at 1.09 g/t gold as an indicated resource and 54.4 million tonnes at 0.95 g/t as an inferred resource, totalling 123.7 million tonnes at an average of 1.03 g/t. The estimate is based on 243 drill holes and just over 29,000 m of drilling to around 300 m depth. Previous metallurgical tests yielded gold recoveries of over 90% using simple gravity and cyanide processes. In addition to Kebigada, the project includes a second, smaller deposit, Douze Match. According to DRC Gold, both resemble the neighbouring Kibali deposit in mineralisation and structure, which, according to company figures, produces more than 600,000 ounces of gold per year. New drilling will need to confirm the old data.

Funding Requirements for Exploration and the Nizi Project
Alongside the Giro project, the package also includes the Nizi project. The area includes the historic King Leopold Mine, last operated commercially in 1931, with further underground potential. The aim is to convert the historical estimate into an NI-43-101-compliant resource in the near term. Fresh capital is required to implement these plans. The company completed its latest private placement in January at CAD 0.15 per unit.
M&A Rationale in a Challenging Geopolitical Environment
Although the Democratic Republic of the Congo benefits from the positive outlook from S&P Global Ratings, African industry analyses nevertheless document ongoing conflicts in the eastern provinces. The Kinshasa government is also tightening mining regulations and demanding ESG compliance from explorers such as DRC Gold. This makes it all the more important that Klaus Eckhof, an experienced expert on the country, leads DRC Gold. At the same time, however, shrinking production at industry leaders such as Newmont reveals a clear takeover rationale: major groups need to replenish reserves. They are primarily looking for resources near their existing processing facilities. DRC Gold's projects in the immediate vicinity of Barrick's Kibali mine fit this acquisition profile precisely. DRC Gold shares remain speculative. Completion of the Giro deal and an up-to-date resource estimate are crucial.
